Decision on Eligibility for Liver Transplantation
After all required examinations are completed for both the liver transplant recipient and donor candidates, the Transplantation Council—comprising specialists and authorized physicians from Gastroenterology, Radiology, Transplant Surgery, and Anesthesia units—meets to evaluate the results. This council unanimously decides whether to approve or reject the transplantation. The goal is to ensure the best decision and outcome for both the recipient and the donor.
Preoperative Preparation and Scheduling
Once the eligibility decision is approved, the transplant date is scheduled. The recipient is hospitalized several days prior to the surgery to complete preoperative preparations. Liver transplant surgery is typically performed 2–3 days after hospitalization by an experienced team of transplant surgeons.
Hospitalization and Postoperative Monitoring
Following the transplant, the recipient is usually monitored in the intensive care unit (ICU) for several days to ensure stability. Under normal conditions, the total hospital stay for the recipient ranges between 10 and 14 days.
The donor’s hospitalization begins one day before surgery. After the operation, the donor is observed in the ICU for the first 24 hours and generally remains in the hospital for 5 to 7 days under routine follow-up.
Monitoring and Medical Evaluations
During the hospitalization period, both recipient and donor undergo daily blood tests, and doctors monitor drain fluid output, urine volume, and vital signs closely. Medication doses are adjusted as necessary. Since recipients are at higher risk for surgical complications during the first ten days, they are regularly evaluated with liver transplant Doppler ultrasound and, when necessary, triphasic abdominal CT scans to ensure the patency of vascular anastomoses and absence of complications.
Infection Prevention and Clinical Rules
Recipients receive intensive immunosuppressive therapy after transplantation to prevent organ rejection. During this period, it is critical to follow all infection prevention protocols and the rules established by the transplant clinic. To reduce the risk of infection, visitor restrictions are strictly enforced in transplant wards.
