What is Tissue and Organ Transplantation?

The term “transplantation” is derived from the combination of two Latin words: “trans”, meaning “to carry,” and “plant”, meaning “to sow.” In essence, the term means “to sow by carrying,” referring to the placement of a graft — an organ or tissue taken from a donor — into a recipient.

Organ transplantation is a medical treatment method in which an organ that has been damaged beyond functional recovery due to chronic or irreversible disease is replaced with a healthy organ obtained from either a living or deceased donor. The organ or tissue transferred in this process is called a graft.

This highly advanced medical procedure represents the most effective and long-lasting life-saving treatment for patients suffering from chronic organ failures. It is particularly essential in the management of kidney, liver, heart, and lung failure — conditions where conventional medical therapies are no longer sufficient to sustain life.
